XENIA — Richard Lee Morckel, 75, of Xenia, formerly of Mount Vernon and Massillon, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Hospice of Dayton, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.
He was born July 28, 1938, in Minerva, Ohio, the son of Kenneth and Mary (Truxall) Morckel. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Xenia, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving honorably during the Cuban Missle Crisis. He was a graduate of Lehman High School and was a former teacher at Canton Central Catholic High School and Jackson High School, of Massillon. He owned a Farmer’s Insurance Agency in Mount Vernon and retired as an agent with Nationwide Insurance in 2012. He was a member of VFW Post 9927, Kettering.
He is survived by his wife, Sondra (Johnson) Howe Morckel; five children, Catherine Thomas of Massillon, Tiffany Bower of Dayton, Tenn., Joseph Morckel of Brewster, Patricia Blankenhorn of Athens and Megan Welch of Massillon; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Michele Doherty and Paul Dischner Jr.; a sister, Shirley Martin of Robertsville, and her three children; and by many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his late wife, Kay Morckel.
Dick will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Services will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Bible Baptist Church, 1679 W. Second St., Xenia, with the Rev. David McClellan officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church. Graveside services will be held Monday at noon at Rose Hill Cemetery, Massillon. A reception for family and friends will be held following the graveside services, at Central Presbyterian Church, 47 Second St., Massillon.
