HEATH — A funeral service celebrating the life of Elmer L. Hughes, 84, of Heath, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service, with Pastor Jeff Belt officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens, where the Licking County Veterans Alliance will provide military honors.
Elmer passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). He was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Newton Falls, Ohio, to the late Elmer and Ruth (Pemberton) Hughes. Elmer served in the U.S. Navy after graduating high school. He retired from Columbus Jack where he was a machinist. He had previously worked for the B&O Railroad, Roper, Quality Farm and Fleet, and Ward Hydraulics. Elmer was a Charter Member of the Heath United Methodist Church. He was an avid OSU Football and Cleveland Brown fan. He loved his grandchildren and family dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice M. (Ritchey); five children, Terry (Jeanne) Hughes of Heath, Doug (Sheila) Hughes of Heath, Mike (Pam) Hughes of Heath, Karen (Drew) Roffey of Oklahoma and Kim (Terry) Walter of Newark; a sister, Mary Booth of Utica; seven grandchildren, Trisha Hughes of Heath, Jeremy (Kelly) Hughes of North Carolina, Megan Hughes of Heath, Tony Roffey of Oklahoma, Clayton (Lindsay) Roffey of Oklahoma, Cameron Roffey of Oklahoma and Ryan (Jonily) Fairburn of Pataskala; and four great-grandchildren, Jamilya Hughes, Anden and Baylor Fairburn and MaCallum Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Jack Hughes, Maxine Hughes and Marjorie Tyson.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1249 Hebron Road, Heath.
