MOUNT VERNON — Charles “Nate” Boyd, 80, of Coshocton Road, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Country Court Nursing Home in Mount Vernon. He was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Mount Vernon, to the late Otis P. and Mable (Harding) Boyd.
Nate served as a sniper in the U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division 1st Platoon of G Company while being stationed in Korea. He was hand chosen to attend the 7th NCO Academy in Munich, Germany, which was considered a major honor. Upon his return to the United States, Nate re-enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army A Troop 1st Squadron 9th Armored Calvary unit during Vietnam. A well-known book entitled “Search and Destroy” by Keith Nolan, documents much of Nate’s time while serving with his tank unit in Vietnam.
Nate was one of the most highly decorated Vietnam veterans in Knox County. He received three Silver Stars, six Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Distinguished Service Cross, which is second only to the Medal of Honor. Nate was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Texas, and was Commander and member of AMVETS Post 95 of Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gunde (Gleitsann) Boyd; a son, Reinhard “Ronnie” (Rosie) Boyd of Virginia; a grandson, Danny Boyd; a brother, Robert (Janet) Boyd of Mount Vernon; and a sister, Mary Whitten of Mount Vernon.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jack Boyd, Joseph Boyd, Dennis Boyd and John Boyd.
Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Pastor Stan Ratliff will be officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions in Nate’s name may be made to the AMVETS Post 95 in Mount Vernon.
