MOUNT VERNON — Ron Staats, 71, of Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at his home unexpectedly.
He was born Aug. 30, 1941, in Mount Vernon, to the late Rollin and Clara (Dowds) Staats. Ron had been in broadcasting since 1959. Since that time, he had worked in Coshocton, Wheeling, W.Va., and 37 years in Mount Vernon. Ron was the 1300 WMVO Program Director and host of the talk show “Radioline.” He was an integral part of this community by serving as the announcer for the Mount Vernon Christmas Parade, master of ceremonies for the Knox County Junior Miss program, Utica Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival and the Dogwood Blossoms Chapter of Sweet Adelines Christmas Show.
Ron had won numerous awards, including the 2004 Community Service Award presented by the Freemasons, Knox Soil & Water Conservation Award, Community Spirit Award, Media Honor Roll and Quality of Life Award sponsored by Knox Community Hospital. He was very active with the Food for the Hungry, Knox County Fair, and was a lifetime member and past vice president of Jaycees in Mount Vernon.
To most of us, Ron was the “Voice” of Knox County. His style and quirky humor will be missed by many. Although there are numerous awards and memberships he had received, Ron would tell you his greatest pleasure was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and his walk of faith with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of the Owl Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jeri (Ball) Staats, whom he married Nov. 24, 1963; two sons, Rod Staats of Alexandria and Shannon (Kristina) Staats of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Nikki (Ryan) Mack of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Alec Staats, Trent, Drew, Jack and Marah Staats, Ellie and Harvey Mack; a brother, Eugene (Marilyn) Staats of Mount Vernon; and a sister, Catherine (Carl) Myers of Columbus.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ron David Staats.
Friends may call Thursday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon. Mr. Ray Richardson will be officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg.
Memorial contributions in Ron’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
