MOUNT VERNON — Letha K. Wharton, 91, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at Knox Community Hospital.

She was born July 30, 1921, in Orrville, to the late Everett and Bernice (Hauger) Hamer. Letha was a proud member of the “Greatest Generation” having been a child of the Depression years and a young adult during World War II. She married her high school sweetheart who was a young glider pilot during the war and flew several important missions including the invasion of Normandy on D Day 1944. Letha and Floyd were married Jan. 21, 1943. Floyd passed away in 2000; they enjoyed 57 years of marriage. During the war years, Letha worked for Cooper-Bessemer as a draftsman. She loved this job and still talked about those years and the people she met and worked with.

During the 1970s, Letha owned and operated a ceramics business selling her original creations in both Knox and Richland counties.

Letha enjoyed long country drives, going out to lunch, shopping, all animals and knitting. During the Depression years, ready-made sweaters were expensive so her mother paid for knitting lessons. It was a gift that Letha used all of her life making all sorts of lovely items for herself, Christmas and birthday gifts for family and friends even including Christmas of 2012 when she was ill. She considered herself an artist and at the age of 80 began taking water color lessons that resulted in many beautiful paintings that will serve family members as a reminder of her talent and relentless determination to not waste her life. Above all Letha loved her family and was at her happiest when spending time with them.

Letha is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David (Waunita) Wharton of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Kevin (Brandy) Wharton of Ontario and Brian (Mary) Wharton of Delaware; four great-grandchildren, Sierra, Brian, Brooklynn and Sara; and her beloved cats, Casey and Sweetie Pie.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wharton; two brothers, Glenn and Dale Hamer; and a sister, Helen Holloway.

The family will observe a private service for family and close friends at Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.

In honor of Letha, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Knox or Richland County.

The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Letha K. Wharton.
