MOUNT VERNON — Miriam Foote Grubb, 100, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home. She had been a resident of the Ohio Eastern Star Home since August 2003.

Miriam was born July 8, 1912, in Bellville, Ohio, to Herbert and Glenn (Mann) Foote, and was valedictorian of the class of 1930 at Fredericktown High School. Miriam played the piano for the silent movies at the local theater in Fredericktown as a senior in high school. She moved to Mount Vernon following graduation where she worked as a clerk and in the office of the J.C. Penny Co. Miriam married Gordon C. Grubb on Aug. 17, 1934, and he preceded her in death in July 1985.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon since 1930, where she was past president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and a long-standing member of the Worship Committee. She also played the piano and organ for many church activities throughout the years. Miriam was the first of three “Life Members” of the Knox Chapter 236, Order of Eastern Star, in Mount Vernon, an honor she received for outstanding service.

She held office in the Knox Chapter for 13 consecutive years, including “Star Points” Esther, Ada, Organist and Chaplain; and had served the chapter as Worthy Matron in 1960. She was Deputy Grand Matron in 1963. Miriam belonged to General Grand Chapter Chorus in 1960, when Ohio was first represented and was the last active Charter Member of the Ohio State Eastern Star Chorus which was formed in 1950. Miriam was also a Charter Member of the Knox Chapter’s Chorus and she was an active member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union for years. Miriam had been a member of the Beethoven Club in Mount Vernon, which was formed in 1878, and was the oldest club in Ohio.

Surviving are her daughter, Marita (John) Freer of Chagrin Falls; her son, Teryl G. (Tancy) Grubb of Flagstaff, Ariz.; grandchildren, Susan Vecchio and David Freer; and great-grandchildren, Julia and Tyler Hubay and Ruth and Miriam Freer.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Grubb; and a sister, Maurine Secrist.

The family will observe a private funeral service. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
