MOUNT VERNON — William S. “Bill” Cleaves Sr., 63, of Newark Road, Mount Vernon, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010.

He was born March 11, 1947, in London, Ohio, to Bernard William and Annabelle (Shipley) Cleaves. Bill was a 1965 graduate of St. Vincent High School and attended Ohio State University. He is notably remembered working alongside his mother for many years in the family business of B.W. Cleaves Tire Company. He most recently worked as an inspector for Metropolitan Housing in Knox County. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Bill’s interests included an appreciation for history and he was an active member of the Midwestern Epigraphic Society. He enjoyed the beauty of remote areas of the wilderness, dousing, gardening, cooking and sharing his most recently discovered recipes. Bill loved his family and enjoyed his many friends and acquaintances. He opened his heart to family pets and the endless visits of wildlife surrounding his home.

He is survived by his mother; a son, Scott Cleaves of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Kellie Hedrick of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Samantha (Jayd) Spence, Megan (Coy) Richert and Tyler Hedrick; two great-grandchildren, Reighlee Richert and Jayden Spence; three sisters, Karen (Lou) Novak of Mansfield, Mary Lowe of Mount Vernon and Becky Cleaves of San Diego, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his father he was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline (Fairchild) Cleaves.

Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
