Eleanor M. Conway
MOUNT VERNON — Eleanor M. (Beaver) Conway, 85, a resident of the Inn at
HillenVale, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 14, 1919, in New Matamoras to Frank and Helen (Bodine) Beaver and had been a resident of Mount Vernon since 1938. Mrs. Conway was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are her son, Michael (Carole) Conway, and daughter, Judith (Lawrence) Diehl, both of Mount Vernon; her grandchildren, Stephen (Stacie) Conway, Kevin (Denise) Conway, Eric (Kami) Diehl, Amy (Brian) Quackenbush and Jennifer Diehl; and her great-grandchildren, Alex and Elizabeth Diehl and Benjamin Quackenbush.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Conway; a brother, Walter Beaver; and sisters, Gwendolyn Sinclair and Jean Schmidt.
Funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the North-Dilley Funeral Home with the Rev. F. Richard Snoke officiating. Friends may call from noon until the time of service on Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Harry B. Giffin
MOUNT VERNON — Harry Bernard Giffin, 94, of Mount Vernon died peacefully
on Nov. 12, 2004, at his son’s home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 10, 1910, in Howard to James Blaine and Elma Hazel (Baker) Giffin.
He is survived by a son, James (Carolyn) Giffin of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Denise N. Giffin of Gambier; a brother, Willard Giffin; two sisters, Dorothy Ruth Ridenbaugh and Mary Vernon, both of Mount Vernon; a stepgranddaughter, Stephanie (John) Helbing of Pataskala; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Derek, Rachel, Amber, Britney and Aaron Gantt; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Giffin, in January 2003; three brothers, James Caroll Giffin, Chauncey W. Giffin and Robert Giffin; and a stepgranddaughter, Michelle Gantt.
Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the North-Dilley Funeral Home, where funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. Pastor Merlyn Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Pauline L. Gilliland
MOUNT VERNON — Pauline Louise Gilliland, 88, of Mount Vernon went to be
with the Lord on Nov. 12, 2004, at the Country Court Nursing Center.
She was born June 12, 1916, in Mount Vernon to Thomas and Rozella (Hess) Burris. She was a member of the Evangelical Nazarene Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Deborah (Ron) Ruby of Gambier and Gloria (Jim) Frost of Mount Vernon; four granddaughters, Dawn Pruett of Urbana, Ayngel Pruett of Columbus, and Michelle Graves and Rachael Hill, both of Mount Vernon; a grandson, Jamie Frost of the home; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Waneta (Willis) Huffman, Geneva Conners and Iada Burris, all of Mount Vernon.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lenn R. Gilliland; and a sister, Thelma McClain.

Evelyn C. Kahrl
MOUNT VERNON — Evelyn (Conley) Kahrl died early in the evening of Nov. 12,
2004, at home. She was 93 years old.
She was born on Feb. 10, 1911, in Mount Vernon to Clyde G. Conley and Elizabeth (Sperry) Conley, the third of four daughters. She was a descendent from Gen. Rufus Putnum, founder of the first settlement in Ohio, and from Gilman Bryant, Mount Vernon’s first merchant when the city was founded in 1805.
A talented musician, she participated in many musical activities at Mount Vernon High School, graduating in 1929. She enrolled in the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, became an excellent violinist studying under Mr. Jean ten Have, and received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1933.
She returned to Mount Vernon and became active as a music teacher, specializing in the violin and served as a Girl Scout leader.
In the middle of World War II, she married a solider, Sgt. Keith Allin Kahrl, also a native of Mount Vernon, on Jan. 16, 1943, a marriage that lasted more than 58 years until his death. She moved from one military location to another with her husband until war’s end.
Upon Mr. Kahrl’s discharge from the Army, the couple returned to Mount Vernon and moved into the house on East High Street next door to her parents home, where she lived until her death. While her husband conducted a real estate brokerage and insurance agency under the name of Kahrl & Company, Mrs. Kahrl raised a family and became involved in many service activities, including Girl Scouts, the Beethoven Club, League of Women Voters and Hospice of Knox County. She was a founder and concertmistress of the Knox County Symphony and participated in its performances for many years. She helped organize the Mount Vernon Swim Club, was a booster of competitive swimming in the community, and was dedicated to swimming as personal exercise. She was lifelong member of the Mount Vernon Country Club, which her father founded.
Mrs. Kahrl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and served as an Elder of the Church.
Mrs. Kahrl is survived her sister, Helen Tiedeman of Tacoma, Wash.; four children, James P. (Terry) Kahrl of Mount Vernon, Robert C. (LaVonne) Kahrl of Hudson, Ann (Sam) Laudeman of Mount Vernon and Clyde C. (Sarah) Kahrl of Mount Vernon; two nieces, Jean S. Miller of Cincinnati and Elizabeth T. Wight of Tacoma, Wash.; and by 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, where the funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Weiss officiating. Burial will be in Mound View Cemetery. The North-Dilley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elwin A. McCluskey
MOUNT VERNON — Elwin A. “Mac” McCluskey, 84, of Mount Vernon
died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Oneida, N.Y., to Albert and Catherine (Lewellin) McCluskey. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, AMVETS and the VFW.
He is survived by a son, Dick (Linda) McCluskey of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Jean (Gary) Monska of Powell; three grandchildren, Sean McCluskey of Hilliard, Rahn (Cindy) McCluskey of Mount Vernon and Wendy (Brad) Capehart of Worthington; four great-grandchildren, Maggie, Kiteley, Colin and Breanna; one brother, Charles (Kathleen) McCluskey of Martinsburg; and a sister, Lewella (Frank) Kozuria of Florida.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Peg” McCluskey, in 1986; and a grandson, Ryan Kelly, in 1989.

Vera McCormick
GROVETOWN, Ga. — Vera McCormick, 84, entered into rest on Saturday morning,
Nov. 13, 2004, at her residence in Grovetown, Ga.
A native of Reading, Pa., she had resided in the Chesterville, Ohio, area from 1946 to the mid-1980s. She had been a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star in Chesterville. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, she had served as a WAC and the postmistress of the post office at Camp Gordon, Ga.
She is survived by two sons, Chuck McCormick of Grovetown, Ga., and Daniel McCormick of Newark; a daughter, Barbara Poteete of Grovetown, Ga.; a brother, John Pyle of Reading, Pa.; four sisters, Jane Bingaman of Reading, Pa., Dorothea Cox of Venice, Fla., Thelma Eschback of Anaheim, Calif., and Gladys Boyer of Reading, Pa.; grandchildren, Chuck McCormick, Shane McCormick and Tiffany; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph McCormick, who passed away in 1996.
The Elliott Sons Funeral Home in Martinez, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.
