MOUNT VERNON — The second novel in the Groundbreaking Reads Adult Summer Reading Program’s Book Discussion series is “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman. The book will be the featured title of the discussion Tuesday, July 16, at 7 p.m., at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 North Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon. The discussion will be led by Mary McGavick, assistant director of the library, assisted by Ted Dingler of the reference and adult services departments.

“Neverwhere” tells the story of Richard Mayhew, a young businessman with a good heart and a dull job. When he stops one day to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk, his life is forever altered. He finds himself propelled into an alternative reality, a world he never dreamed existed. This is the world of London Below, a subterranean labyrinth of abandoned subway stations and sewer canals beneath the city, a world far stranger and more dangerous than the only one he has ever known.

In the shadow city of lost and forgotten people, places and times, his companions are a young woman, Door, who is trying to discover who hired the assassins who murdered her family, and why; the Marquis of Carabas, a trickster who trades services for very big favors; and Hunter, a mysterious lady who guards bodies and hunts only the biggest game. There is plenty of action — and allusions to everything from “Paradise Lost” to “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” It is a very satisfying read.

Book discussions are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Copies of the book may be checked out at the library; or purchased at Paragraphs Book Store, 229 S. Main St.; Colonial Book Shop & Kid’s Shelf, 521 S. Main St., Mount Vernon or the Kenyon College Bookstore in Gambier. For more information, call the main library at 740- 392-BOOK (2665), Ext. 243; visit www.knox.net or email communityrelations@knox.net.
