MOUNT VERNON — The Heritage Centre Association’s June First Friday event will be Friday, June 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., in downtown Mount Vernon. The event will feature music by Jim Frady and The Music Men, the Knox County OSU Alumni Band and the cast of MTVarts “The Music Man.”

Reminiscent of the era of “The Music Man” in mind, First-Knox National Bank will be providing a variety of free, old-fashioned activities including root beer floats, horseshoes, croquet, a cake walk and more.

Additional activities include Sophia’s Petting Zoo, a bounce house, balloon sculptor Rex Naylor, a kids’ craft area and cornhole. Cruise In sponsor. Goody bags will be given to 25 random registrants of the Cruise In. There is no fee to participate; door prizes will be awarded. The registration tent will be on the west side of Public Square.

Food will be provided on the Square by G&G Concessions. Downtown merchants will be open late for shopping and dining, many with special discounts. Some of the activities found at downtown merchants include:

  • Y-Not Cycling & Fitness — Register to win a gift certificate.

  • MVNU Schnormeier Gallery — Browse an art exhibit by Knox County high school students.

  • The Place@The Woodward — See “An Evening with Mimes.”

  • WNZR’s Big Blue — Register to win a Bible prize basket including books, a DVD, Casting Crowns CD and a study Bible.

  • Herald’s Appliances and Electronics — See cooking/grilling demos with samples with Chef Rob from the Gallagher Center.

  • Gospel Supply Shop — Hear music by 3C Harmony.

  • Woolson’s Spice Co. — Enjoy a book signing of “Imagination Lost” by local author Glenn T. Horne.

  • Paragraphs Bookstore — Bring the kids for story hour with Marilyn Nagy at 6:30 p.m.

  • Harvest@The Woodward — Discover something delicious at the local foods market in the 100 block of South Main.

  • Western & Southern Financial Group (exhibiting on the Square) — Register to win a one-night bed and breakfast stay in Amish country.

  • Shops on North Main “Very Short North” — Visit the children’s duck pond to win a prize, coordinated by The Smiling Sunflower.

  • Shops in the 200 block of South Main — Participate in the kids’ sidewalk chalk art contest from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Explore more than 30 exhibitors on the Public Square.

Award-winning musician Brian Henke will perform at the FirstMerit portico. The Woodward Opera House will be open for tours from 6 to 8 p.m.

Traffic will be closed one block north of the Square, around the Square and on South Main Street to Ohio Avenue (Gambier Street will remain open) starting at 4:30 p.m. Rain location for the bands is Creative Foundations at 127 S.
