MOUNT VERNON — Expectant parents and parents of infants and toddlers are invited to a free parenting training entitled “Understanding Your Child’s Temperament” on Tuesday, May 21, at New Hope Early Childhood Center, 1700 Upper Gilchrist Road in Mount Vernon from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn how to better understand their child’s temperament and how temperament contributes to his or her behavior. Parents will leave the session with ideas for how to respond to their child’s individual temperament in ways helpful for both parents and children.

Renee Sutherland, LISW-S, will be the trainer. She is the Child Mental Health Coordinator for Knox County Head Start and has a sincere passion to help parents and teachers be all that they can be for the children that they live and work with. As a Certified Conscious Discipline instructor, Sutherland provides a variety of workshops that address the importance of healthy connections, safety and healthy ways to address the many behavior challenges that confront parents and teachers. Her extensive experience in early childhood education as a classroom teacher and center director, her background as a clinical social worker in Early Childhood Mental Health, along with her first-hand experience in implementation of Conscious Discipline across a Head Start agency, gives her practical insights and stories to share with her audiences.

Parents of infants and toddlers and expectant parents are encouraged to attend. Free child care and dinner are provided during the training and each participant receives $10 to assist with transportation. Sessions are made possible with funding by the United Way of Knox County. Call 397-1344 ext. 203 to make reservations. If you need transportation to and from the training, request it when registering.
