MOUNT VERNON — The Heritage Centre Association’s (HCA) First Friday season will kick off on Friday, May 3, from 6-9 p.m., in downtown Mount Vernon. The event will feature the band The Usual Suspects & Repeat Offenders, playing a variety of jazz, swing and blues favorites.
There will be a number of family friendly activities, including Sophia’s Petting Zoo, a bounce house, balloon sculptor Rex Naylor, a kids’ craft area and cornhole.
The popular Cruise In returns and goody bags will be given 25 random registrants. There is no fee to participate; door prizes will be awarded. The registration tent will be on the west side of Public Square.
Food will be provided on the Square by Flapper’s Bar & Grille and Woolson's Concessions. Downtown merchants will be open late for shopping and various art galleries will host receptions. Some of the activities found at downtown merchants include:
•SPI (Science Playspace Initiative) — Tornado and water activities.
•Kudos Art CoOp – Second anniversary celebration. Visit the tent for art demonstrations and refreshments will be available.
•Y-Not Cycling & Fitness – They will give away a gift certificate.
•MVNU Schnormeier Gallery – Senior art majors will exhibit their senior projects.
•The Place @ The Woodward – Mount Vernon High School vocal and instrumental students who went to spring competition will perform.
•WNZR’s Big Blue — Register to win a Mother’s Day prize basket with “mom”-themed books, a CD, a mug and travel mug with tea.
•Herald’s Appliances and Electronics – Chef Rob from the Gallagher Center will offer cooking/grilling demos with samples.
•200 block of South Main — Bring the kids down for a sidewalk chalk art contest.
Acoustic guitarist Noah Shull will perform at the FirstMerit portico, and The Woodward Opera House will be open for tours from 6-8 p.m.
Traffic will be closed one block north of Public Square, around the square and on south Main Street to Ohio Avenue (Gambier Street will remain open) starting at 4:30 p.m. Rain location for the band is Creative Foundations at 127 S.
