MOUNT VERNON The Mount Vernon Shade Tree and Beautification Commission is promoting the planting of dogwood trees in the city. In the 1960s, the Chamber of Commerce promoted the sale and planting of dogwood trees making Mount Vernon a tourist destination in the spring. Many of the dogwoods planted in the past are old and dying of disease or insect infestation.

To assist in this citywide project, the commission will be distributing dogwood tree saplings to all fourth grade students in Mount Vernon the week of April 22.

Teachers can promote this civic activity in any way they would like. Many schools have Arbor Day and/or Earth Day celebrations in April with poster and poetry contests. The tree distribution could be part of that.

There is a publication by the Arbor Day Foundation called Arbor Day. The website is Many ideas and activities for children and families about caring for trees are given in the newsletter.

The Mount Vernon Shade Tree and Beautification Commission would like to encourage members of the community to join it in replanting dogwoods in their yards this spring. An Arbor Day celebration and dedication will be on Friday, April 26, at Dan Emmett Elementary School on Mansfield Avenue at 1 p.m.
