GAMBIER ó A Contra Dance is to be held at Kenyon College on Friday, April 19, at 7 p.m., in the Kenyon College Athletic Center.

Contra Dancing has its roots in English and Scottish country dancing and uses many moves from square dancing, English country dancing and other folk dance styles. The dances are done with a walking step and donít involve fancy footwork. Anyone from teenagers to older adults can enjoy contra dancing. It is accessible even to those who think they have two left feet, says Janet Chandler, organizer of the dance. At the same time, it is great fun and good exercise. No experience is necessary for the dance, which will be from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Dance Rehearsal Space on the second floor of the KAC on Duff street, off OH 229.

Lessons are available at 6:30 p.m., immediately preceding the dance. Susan English will teach the lesson and then call the dance. English is an experienced caller who has called dances throughout Ohio and neighboring states.

Putting extra bounce in the event is Pocketful ĎO Gimmick, a band of Ohio musicians who are accomplished accompanists of contra dances.

Dancers should bring clean shoes that slide but donít slip, as well as a water bottle.

There is a small charge for the event.

For more information call Brian Miller at 740-427-4010.
