GAMBIER — New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will deliver the address at the Kenyon College 184th Commencement on May 18, 2013.

Bloomberg is a three-term New York City mayor, business visionary, and philanthropist. A self-made billionaire, Bloomberg graduated from Johns Hopkins University on the strength of student loans and his work as a parking lot attendant. He later earned a master’s in business administration at Harvard Business School. Bloomberg began his career with an entry-level job at Salomon Brothers, a Wall Street firm, and eventually became a general partner and supervised the firm’s information systems. He left Salomon Brothers after that firm was acquired and went on to create Bloomberg LP, a financial news and information service with about 13,000 employees worldwide.

“We are pleased to welcome Mayor Bloomberg to Kenyon,” Kenyon President S. Georgia Nugent said. “He has demonstrated exceptional leadership as the mayor of one of the world’s greatest cities. He created a business powerhouse, and his dedication to philanthropy is a model for others. Mayor Bloomberg is an inspirational choice as our Commencement speaker for the Class of 2013.”

Bloomberg was elected mayor within months of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and he has helped lead the city into a new era of safety and economic strength with an emphasis on public health and environmental stewardship. He is a political independent. The Bloomberg Philanthropies Foundation has provided hundreds of millions of dollars of gifts to organizations with the priorities of public health, the arts, government innovation, the environment, and education.
