MOUNT VERNON — Chad Christopher, 39, is officially the new chief of Fire and Emergency Services for the City of Mount Vernon. Christopher’s appointment was effective at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

He is expected to be sworn in Friday morning.

“I think he will make a fine chief,” said Mayor Richard Mavis. “I don’t expect him to be just like any previous chief, but will be his own chief.”

Safety-Service Director Dave Glass officially notified Christopher of the appointment in a letter written last week after he and the mayor met with him and discussed the results of the assessment conducted by the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.

The first six months will be a probationary period, after which Christopher’s performance will be reviewed for confirming him in the position.

Christopher became interim chief on Sept. 14 when former Chief Chris Menapace left to accept a position with the city of Whitehall Fire Department.

He was originally hired as a firefighter and paramedic on March 8, 2001, and was promoted to captain on Feb. 14, 2012.
