MOUNT VERNON — The Ohio Eastern Star home on Gambier Road came to the city Planning Commission this week with a plan for a $13 million project at the home, Mayor Richard Mavis reported at his weekly press briefing.
The OES came to the planning board because the facility was constructed under a Planned Neighborhood Development plan and modification of the original plan needs approval from the city.
Mavis said the plans they were shown involve constructing four connected “neighborhood” units with a total of 62 beds, and each unit having its own commons area and food service. After completion the project will involve tearing down some of the existing facility to make way for future plans.
The project also includes completing the loop road around the facility and adding some parking.
The new units will be located to the north of the Gallagher Centre.
The city will soon have a new fire chief and the process will begin this week for selecting a new police chief.
Safety-Service Director Dave Glass said the city has received the assessment report from the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association on Chad Christopher, who had the top score on the test for the position and has been the acting chief since Chris Menapace left. Glass said he and the mayor will meet with Christopher next week and make an official announcement after that.
