MOUNT VERNON — The requested 2014 budget for the Knox County Board of Elections was shared with the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Thursday afternoon by board of elections director Kim Horn.

Total budget requested within the department came to $397,885. This was up from a proposed budget of $365,885. The commissioners had appropriated $400,000 due to unexpected higher costs for poll workers. The 2013 estimated cost for poll workers was at $41,000, and the actual cost for all workers came to $70,000. Horn explained that despite how many items may appear on a ballot, a certain number of poll workers is required to be working at each precinct.

Most other line items in the budget including employees’ salary, supplies, advertising, polling location rental, etc., reflected a small budget increase. Travel saw a somewhat larger increase over last year due to a raise in mileage allowance.

The commissioners hope to have a final decision on the budget by the end of the year.
