MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council gave only first reading to a routine measure authorizing a contract with Knox County for the housing of prisoners at the county jail. Councilman Mike Hillier moved to delay final approval so a committee meeting can be held and some specific numbers obtained from the county.

Mayor Richard Mavis said the county has indicated it might keep the cost at the current level if the city pays some extra money for the Public Defender’s Office, Emergency Management and the new Emergency Notification System, but has not made a specific proposal to the city.
