MOUNT VERNON — A bright and shiny gym floor, a handsome set of bleachers, upper-deck mezzanine viewing of the gym plus up-to-date contemporary furnishings all around were on display Wednesday at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Members of the faculty and staff at MVNU were given the opportunity for the first public viewing of Ariel Arena, the campus’ new state-of-the-art athletic facility.
Small groups were escorted on a tour of the arena as the various rooms and features were showcased, all in preparation for next week’s grand opening of the facility. Leading the first group of visitors on their tour was Denny Taylor, director of facilities’ services, who opened each room and area of the arena and explained all the modern amenities that are built into the facility.
The gymnasium itself contains seating for 2,000 spectators and includes retractable bleachers on each side. On the south end of the gym, the bleachers can be retracted to open up into a stage area which can be used for special events. Entrance into the gym will be made on the top floor, while a walkway will extend around the mezzanine perimeter of the gym. Also located on the top floor are a cardio-fitness room, a VIP room for special events, as well as restrooms and concession stands at the north and south ends of the gym.
On the lower level is an extensive weight room, coaches’ offices, a conference room, an athletic training area, and locker rooms for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams, home and visitors, plus separate locker rooms for coaches and officials.
