MOUNT VERNON — In Mount Vernon’s 2nd Ward, which is the west side of town north of Ariel-Foundation Park, first-term Republican John Francis is being challenged by Democrat Greg Richey.
Francis is a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and spent more than 19 years working at TRW. He has worked in customer service at Connell’s Furniture for 5 1/2 years. He has been a volunteer for the POPW/MIA Project for 25 years.
He has been married to the former Judy Hinger, a native of Howard, for 31 years and has two children, Jacob Francis and Felicia Edwards, and three grandchildren.
Greg Richey, the Democratic candidate for the 2nd Ward council seat, teaches communications at Central Ohio Technical College in Newark, Mount Vernon and Coshocton, and at Zane State University in Zanesville. He grew up in Dayton and earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and political science from Ohio State University in 2006 and a master’s degree in communication from OSU in 2011.
He and his wife, Holli, moved to Mount Vernon in 2007 because she wanted to move back to where she lived in the 1990s and he was attracted to the community.
He plays in the bell choir at First Congregational United Church of Christ and has participated in productions with Orange Barrel Theater and Right Brain Productions, and is active in the Knox County Democratic Party.
The News posed several questions to the candidates regarding hot topics in the city.
