MOUNT VERNON — Downtown Mount Vernon will glisten as merchants and parade entries take on the 2013 Christmas Parade theme, “Christmas ... Make it Sparkle.”
News Publisher Kay Culbertson is excited about the upcoming Christmas Parade and Walk especially with all the possibilities the theme opens when designing parade entries.
“This is the time of year when everyone should come together and celebrate,” Culbertson said.
The Christmas Parade and Walk will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1. The walk begins at 1 p.m. and continues until 5 with Caroling for Christ on Public Square. The parade begins at 2:30.
The Mount Vernon News is in its 20th year of organizing the parade, a task Culbertson enjoys.
“This is all about the kids — kids of all ages,” Culbertson said. “To see the look on the faces of the children, that’s priceless.”
Staging area for the parade is once again provided by Prestress Services Industries, formerly United Precast Industries, 400 Howard St., Mount Vernon.
Culbertson loves having the Christmas Parade as part of the Christmas Walk and credits the successful merger of the two events to the generosity of Prestress Services Industries.
“They continue to support the parade and without that support, we could not enjoy the wonderful parade route we have now,” Culbertson said.
Entries can begin to line up at 10:30 a.m. Judging begins at noon and ends promptly at 1:30 p.m. Parade categories are walking entry, animal entry, business entry, humorous entry, religious entry, senior entry, youth entry, auto entry — 1960 and before, auto entry — 1961 and after, school entry, horse-drawn entry, equestrian entry, miniature horse/pony entry, antique implement entry, emergency vehicle entry, club & service organization entry and motorcycle entry.
Those wishing to participate in the parade must fill out an entry form and submit a description of the entry no later than Monday, Nov. 25.
The parade will travel from Howard Street west to South Main Street where it will move north to Public Square.
The annual Christmas Walk and Parade Auction will take place Thursday at the Parkside Restaurant. Social time begins at 5:30 p.m., following by the live auction of parade category sponsorships at 6. Walk sponsorships are also available for pre-determined price points.
The Christmas Walk will feature a carousel, a train ride, Secret Santa Shop, Caroling for Christ and many more activities, many of them free including the carousel and train ride.
“Christmas is really a festive and happy time,” Culbertson said. “Everything is free — the parade, the rides — that’s why we rely on our sponsors.”
Culbertson encourages all Knox County residents to participate in the Christmas Walk and share in the spirit of the Christmas season.
Watch the News for the upcoming announcement of the parade marshal. Past marshals have included Joel Riley, Red Shaw, Chuck Strickler, John Ellis, and the late Ron Staats to name a few.
