HOWARD — All five candidates made their cases for being elected to the East Knox Local Board of Education at a Meet the Candidates forum Tuesday evening sponsored by the “Our Kids ... Our Future” East Knox Levy Committee.
East Knox voters will elect three board members. None of the candidates are incumbents, although Larry Campbell spent a total of 24 years on the board before stepping down two years ago.
The candidates were given the opportunity to make opening and closing statements, in between which they each answered eight questions presented by Moderator Thom Collier.
Four of the five candidates endorsed passage of the operating levy on the November ballot. Only candidate Mary Garn said she would not vote for the levy, saying, “Many people can’t afford it and I’m here for them.”
Dean Opfer said, “We need local funds. Without them we can’t operate. It’s our responsibility to pay back what was paid to us. We’ve cut everything we could cut.”
“Of course I’m voting yes,” said Don Lemley. “We need to really push information.”
