MOUNT VERNON — Pleasant Street Elementary was in the spotlight Monday at the Mount Vernon school board meeting. Mary Lou Jacklin and Sonya Price presented highlights of a program that brings together a team of engineers from Rolls-Royce and fifth-grade students. Brian Hamilton, engineering transformation program manager, received the Pleasant Street Behind the Scenes award for his work on the project.
“It’s a great connection between the community and the schools,” Superintendent Bill Seder told the News on Tuesday. “It’s education at its best, because students can really see the relevance of what they are learning in science class.”
Teresa Sant, on behalf of the Music Boosters, also presented to the board. She reported the boosters raised $95,000 for the band/choir/orchestra Disney trip last year, and $11,780 for other expenses. Seder said the boosters are continuing their efforts to raise money for new uniforms; some of the ones currently in use are 10 years old.
