DANVILLE — Jim Bisenius is on a mission to solve a major social issue, one victim at a time. Bisenius is a psychologist, 20 years removed from earning a Master’s degree at Ohio State and following a career path he never envisioned. He set out to be a therapist and help young people at risk of self harm. After counseling hundreds of clients he began to specialize in bullying, a problem as old as the human race that’s been given new wrinkles by social media.
A little over a decade ago, Bisenius began speaking to students, teachers, administrators and parents, and has developed a program he calls Bully Proofing Our Youth. He has made presentations in nearly 500 schools, and Tuesday held seminars for Danville Local Schools.
After three age-appropriate presentations to students from first grade through high school, he addressed teachers and administrators about their role in combating bullying. And the rapid-fire speaker still had enough reserve energy to talk to parents for nearly two hours during the evening.
He didn’t say it would be easy, but Bisenius assured his audiences that proven techniques will aid victims of bullying. More accurately, he outlined techniques victims can use to rescue themselves. He also held out hope to bullies whose prospects for a happy life are grim compared to those they badger
