MOUNT VERNON — Capt. Chad Christopher will serve as interim chief of the Mount Vernon Fire Department, Mayor Richard Mavis announced Friday.
Mavis said Safety/Service Director Dave Glass made the appointment Thursday after the two of them had discussed the situation and also consulted with outgoing Chief Chris Menapace.
Christopher is a 12-year veteran of the department and has been an officer the last six years. Mavis said he and Glass met with Christopher this week and were “impressed with his attitude.”
Menapace will technically be on the payroll through Sept. 13, but he will be using a week of vacation between now and then.
The administration had considered just having the shift captains administer the department through the process of finding a new chief, and the captains could have handled the internal administration, Menapace said, but he believes it is important that in dealing with other city departments and with other emergency agencies in the county, “it’s important there be one go-to person for them to deal with.”
