MOUNT VERNON — Fire Capt. Joe Jurkowitz has informed the city administration that he will not be able to accept the fire chief’s position, Mayor Richard Mavis reported at his weekly press briefing Friday. Jurkowitz was in line for the position based on his score from the last round of testing for the chief’s position.
Safety-Service Director Dave Glass said the city will begin the testing process again, first having Civil Service prepare the list of who is eligible to take the test, then scheduling a time for the test. A month of study time must be allowed before the test.
Glass said that the result is that it will probably be November before the city has a new fire chief.
An interim manager will be assigned, he said.
Mavis said that Monday will be the last weekday for the Hiawatha Water Park/Pool to be open, since school opens Tuesday.
The park will be closed Tuesday through Friday, reopen the weekend of Aug. 24 and 25, close Aug. 26 to 30 and then reopen for Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1 to 3.
