  • This Mount Vernon Police cruiser was heavily damaged in a collision at the intersection of South Mulberry Street and West Ohio Avenue at 7:52 a.m. Friday. Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Toby Smith said MVPD Patrolman Brian Weiser was southbound on South Mulberry Street on a run with lights and siren on. A car driving west on West Ohio Avenue ran into the left side of the cruiser, knocking it sideways and backwards. The right rear corner hit a street sign and tree that caused the cruiser to roll over. The name of the other driver was not available this morning. Injuries to the drivers were not believed serious. The patrol, which investigates crash involving other law enforcement vehicles, is continuing its investigation. style=

  • The Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a house fire at 655 S. Edgewood Road, near Colville Road, around 7:45 this morning, where a resident was found dead. A second resident of the home told the News he awoke to find a bedroom on fire and called the fire department. The Knox County Coroner’s office was called to the scene as well as MVFD investigator Terry Davis and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The blaze was under control within 30 minutes, while the house sustained extensive interior damage. The name of the victim was not released at press time. The investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire. style=
