MOUNT VERNON — Work is progressing at the new wastewater treatment plant in Howard as the plant is expected to be up and running by early April. “I’m getting pretty excited,” said county water/wastewater superintendent Ray Withers during an update he gave to the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Thursday morning.
Photos were shared by Withers showing work being done on the screen room, oxidation tanks, aeration basin and other areas of construction. He explained that the product being produced at the plant will be class B sludge.
Withers is hoping for a date of April 1 for the plant to be operational, but said it may be as late as April 8. Equipment has been brought in and put into place which needs to be started up. Factory representatives will be coming in to get the equipment started and make sure it is running properly before the plant can go into operation. Final completion with the plant fully functional is expected in July. Equipment conversion will take place during this time period as well as final site grading of the property.
“I think it’s gone well,” said Withers about the construction of the new plant. “Every project has some glitches, but we’ve done a good job of solving what little problems we found. I expect everything to work fine.”
