MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle identified the man found in a Shirley Avenue apartment Thursday as 52-year-old Brad Grosscup. His body was found by the Mount Vernon Fire Department when it responded to a fire in the apartment.

Ogle said the cause of death is still under investigation, but preliminary autopsy findings “clearly show” that the deceased had died prior to the fire.

“No soot was found in the airway,” she explained, “and there were decompositional changes, which suggest death one to two days prior to the fire.”

Capt. George Hartz of the Mount Vernon Police Department said the department is treating the case as a homicide at this point and will continue to look for clues and collect evidence.

Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chris Menapace confirmed the fire did break out in Grosscup’s apartment, the cause of which is still under investigation. No other individuals were in the apartment.
