MOUNT VERNON — City Law Director Chip McConville announced Monday night the owner of the Curtis Inn provided him with a 2013 license to operate the hotel from the Ohio Department of Commerce. However, an inspection will be required prior to the reopening of the establishment.
“There was some change in the status,” McConville told council. “Anytime there is a change it triggers a re-inspection.”
According to the State Fire Marshal’s website, the Curtis Inn is now licensed to operate a hotel with 64 rooms.
Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chris Menapace said owner Sucha Singh has what appears to be a valid hotel license. City officials are in the process of validating its authenticity because it does differ from the hotel’s previous license. Once confirmed, Menapace will schedule a full inspection of the facility.
“The goal will be to have the facility in full compliance with fire and health codes of the state of Ohio,” Menapace said.
Mount Vernon City Council members voiced their opinions regarding the hotel during Monday night’s council meeting.
“I think the city should do everything it can to keep the Curtis closed until owners show they have a handle on the drugs and possible prostitution,” council member Mike Hillier said. “The hotel was better off today (closed) than it was last week.”
Susan Kahrl said the Our Opinion piece in the Mount Vernon News on Monday addressing the “Curtis’ future and the plight of the homeless should give us food for thought.”
Janis Seavolt said she hopes the Curtis can be brought back to what it once was.
Manager James Rhinebolt was arrested last Thursday for operating a hotel without a license. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 20.
