MOUNT VERNON — A minor sacrifice is making a big difference in Knox County, all because of the generosity of one local business.

Numerous non-profit agencies have been the recent beneficiary of monetary donations from Dean’s Jewelry at 1558 Coshocton Ave. Dean’s began the practice of collecting money from the sales of watch battery replacements and donating this to different charities.

“It just kind of evolved that we wanted to help local places, and we thought this would be a great way to do it,” said Tracey Hardy, one of the managers at Dean’s Jewelry. A different charity is selected each month for the donation.

The charity of choice for January is Wolf Run Dog Park. Other recent donations have gone to Hospice of Knox County, Equine Therapy, Knox County Animal Shelter, United Way, Habitat For Humanity, New Directions and the Woodward Opera House. More than $7,000 in donations has been given since Dean’s took on this project.

“We were thrilled. What a nice way to help the community in multiple ways ... helping their customers while helping the community,” said Jen Odenweller, executive director of the United Way of Knox County, after receiving their donation from Dean’s Jewelry. “We’ve been very pleased since Dean’s Jewelry came to town and appreciate the relationship we have with them. This helps us do our work in the community. I really appreciate businesses taking a moment in being creative with how they can generate some funds to serve some customers and invest it in the community.”
