MOUNT VERNON — The city has ordered the Curtis Inn to remove or repair the walkway over the alley between the hotel’s buildings.
At his weekly press briefing Friday, Mayor Richard Mavis gave the News a copy of the letter sent to the hotel after the walkway was inspected by Safety/Service Director Dave Glass, Fire Chief Chris Menapace and City Engineer Cameron Keaton.
The letter says the city considers the walkway “unsafe and a danger to the public and to inhabitants of the hotel.”
The city recommends the walkway be removed immediately to prevent injury or property damage and gives a deadline of Nov. 16 for removal or repair. The letter also says the city will not permit repair or replacement without engineering plans approved by the state.
A manager at the hotel said Friday he has not been notified about which option the owner will take.
Grant approved
The city has finally received notice that its application for a Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund grant to clean up the old American National Can site has been approved, Mavis reported.
The mayor said the current owner of the site, Rio Tinto, will pay the $552,975 local match to get the $1,658,926 grant. Total project cost is $2,211,901.
A consultant should be hired by the end of the year to prepare the bid specifications for the cleanup project, and a contractor selected by mid-2013.
Mavis said the cleanup is expected to take from 12 to 18 months, but the deadline for work to be completed is Oct. 12, 2015, so there is plenty of time if unforeseen delays occur.
