FREDERICKTOWN — Fredericktown United Methodist will sell firewood on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon, near Ankneytown. This is the tenth year that the church has organized the firewood sale, and the proceeds of the sale will be used to help local residents pay heating bills.

Wednesday afternoon Dr. William Elder and Gary Alverson worked at the Ankneytown site pulling trees out of the woods of a local farm in preparation for the church work day. The men, along with Terry Divelbiss, are the event coordinators.

They spend many hours in the month prior to the event dragging the trees out of the woods. Their preparation is an important measure. Many novice volunteers, including children, help the day of the sale, so pulling the trees out of the woods beforehand is a safety measure.

As many as 80 people, ages 3 to 80, have turned out to help each year. While those experienced with chain saws cut, and others split the wood, more volunteers load trailers and truck for customers.

Church members and community friends will meet for breakfast early the morning of Oct. 27, and then spend the next four hours cutting and splitting the firewood and then, loading, and sometimes hauling it for customers.
