MOUNT VERNON — A second report regarding a person impersonating a Columbia Gas representative was taken by the Mount Vernon Police Department before noon today. Sunday afternoon the department received a report of a man going door to door in Mount Vernon claiming to be a Columbia Gas representative.

The man in Sunday’s incident was reportedly attempting to collect on past due account. It is unclear at this time if today’s incident is the same person or if he/she was attempting to collect money.

Columbia Gas spokesperson Amy Koncelik told the News that Columbia Gas employees do not go door to door to collect on gas bills and Columbia Gas employees do not typically work on Sundays except for emergency service.

She further noted that a Columbia Gas employee will have photo ID and a Columbia Gas uniform.

Columbia Gas trucks are white, but unlike the unmarked Dodge truck in Sunday’s incident, they clearly have the company name on the truck.

She added Columbia Gas contracts with another company to read its meters. Their trucks are also white and will say Bermex and indicate that they are contractors for Columbia Gas.

Koncelik stated that Bermex is in the area reading meters today.

If residents are suspicious because they do not see identification, they are encouraged to call the Mount Vernon Police Department at 397-2222.
