MOUNT VERNON — October’s First Friday festivities kicked off with the presentation of Mount Vernon City Volunteers of the Year awards to Roger Hedrick, Steve Short and John Zale. Gordon Yance was honorerd in absentia.
Mayor Richard Mavis said he couldn’t say enough about all the volunteers who “come out every month” and serve without pay on one of the several committees or boards that help keep the city running smoothly.
Short has served on the recreation board from 1997 to the present. He said it was quite humbling as well as an honor get the award. “My kids have benefited from the opportunities we have here in Mount Vernon,” he said, “and volunteering is just an opportunity to help make sure it continues for those kids that come after mine.”
Hedrick began his service on the recreation board in 2004. He said it was kind of awkward to be singled out because of the numbers of dedicated volunteers. “I appreciate it on behalf of everyone,” he said. “It’s indicative of our good community and the nonprofit organizations and the quality of volunteers. It’s really a testament to Mount Vernon.”
Hedrick said having three sons motivated him to volunteer. “That keeps you involved,” he added. “If everybody volunteers in some way, you know your kids are taken care of through the other volunteers. I plan to be there for other people’s kids in the community, not just my own.”
Board of Zoning Appeals honoree John Zale volunteered from 2005 to this year. He said was pleased to receive the award and he volunteers because he feels there’s an obligation. “Mount Vernon’s been home for us since 1966,” he said. “This is our town, why shouldn’t we contribute?”
