FREDERICKTOWN — Pedal power, marksmanship and catching ability, strength and agility and even milking skills were on display Saturday evening at the Fredericktown Tomato Show.
Youngsters started off the competitions with a Big Wheel bike race, pedaling furiously to be the first to the finish line. There were three divisions in the timed competition. Olivia Newland won the 3- and 4-year-old division; Kaelen Bauersfield came in first in the 5- and 6-year-old division; and Peyton Hogg was the fastest in the 7- and 8-year-old race.
Next up was the crowd-pleasing bathtub race. Each competing team consisted of a driver, sitting in a tub filled with diluted tomato juice, and two pushers. Athleticism, speed and control all came into play as the contest unfolded. The course started downhill at Leve Agri-Man and, after a U-turn partway down the North Main hill, returned uphill to the starting line. Adding to the excitement were little snags such as shoes falling off the a pusher or two, belts not fastened tightly enough and, of course, trouble on the turn.
The winners were: Women Only, Maggie Brown, Leesha Clevenger and Dani Geoppinger; 25 and over, David Swartzentruber, Vince Swartzentruber and Hannah Hershberger; and 25 and under, CJ Ruhl, Jamison Shipley and Derrick Morrison. The Methodists won this year’s Minister’s Challenge.
