MOUNT VERNON — Few people can claim to have heard the voices of the dead in a cemetery; but this weekend visitors to Mound View Cemetery will hear voices. The voices will be those of reenactors portraying historic figures buried in the cemetery during the second annual Mound View Cemetery Tours.
The tours will be available Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m. each day. The tours last approximately 90 minutes with the last tour starting at 3:30 p.m.
“It really is history come to life,” stated organizer Susan Kahrl, “because we’re finding out new things about people who we can add to the historic records for Mount Vernon.”
Last year was the first year that Kahrl organized tours and Mount Vernon High School teacher Jeff Gottke portrayed senator Jesse Burgess Thomas. Kahrl said that Gottke was so intrigued by Thomas that he wrote his master’s dissertation on him, traveling to Illinois last spring for research.
