MOUNT VERNON — The smaller animals went for some pretty big prices at this year’s Sale of Champions at the Knox County Fair.
Justin Howell won the title for Grand Champion Market Lamb. Howell is from Danville and is a member of Barn Yard Bunch 4-H. The 9-year-old won his first champion title this year.
His mother showed sheep and cattle for years and his grandfather also showed, so this year Justin decided to show.
His 140-pound lamb sold for $10 per pound to Didinger Crop Services of Danville.
He enjoyed preparing for the fair, adding, “I like it because I get to spend time with animals.”
Hannah Valente won the Reserve Grand Champion Broilers. The 16-year-old Centerburg resident is a member of Animals R Us and this was her first year in 4-H. She said her family raised chickens for their own use so she thought she would try 4-H.
The People’s Bank of Gambier purchased the chickens for $900.
“It’s amazing that I won,” stated Valente, “I love the experience. And I got very attached to my chickens.”
Correction
Friday’s article about the small animal sale of champions should have stated that Justin Howell won the title for Reserve Champion Market Lamb. Shelby Ruckman won the Grand Champion Market Lamb trophy. Her 138-pound lamb was purchsed by Prime Time Crane and M & M Trucking for $14.50 per pound.
