MOUNT VERNON — Like many groups and exhibitors, the Knox County Youth Fair Choir is busy this week learning the songs and choreography for their 11 performances on the Midway Stage at the Knox County Fair. In honor of the choir’s 25th anniversary, they will be performing the group’s favorite songs from previous years.
The choreographed vocal performances will include the songs “Disney Dazzle,” “Angels Among Us,” “No County Like Knox County,” “Sing the Stars and Stripes,” and “Mountain Music.”
The choir is directed by Jennifer Long and Bobbi Maleszewski.
Easton Groom and Jonah Fitzsimmons, both age 9, spoke with the News during a break in rehearsal Tuesday. This is Groom’s first year and Fitzsimmon’s second. Their experience is similar to many other choir member’s. Many members join because a sibling is either currently or formerly in the choir.
Fitzsimmons followed his brother Blaize into the group and Groom is enjoying his first year with his sister Makenzy.
“It’s pretty fun,” stated Groom, “I’ve been to a bunch of my sister’s practices. I listened and learned the songs just because I heard them a lot.”
The choir is open to youth ages 9-14 and there are no tryouts. It is open to all youth in the county. They will rehearse every day this week for four hours at the Eastern Star Home, learning the song lyrics and accompanying choreography.
Allyson Long has been a member of the choir for three years. Director Long is her cousin. Her sister, Caira, was also a member. “When Caira was in it, every time she came back from practice I would learn her moves. So I was like my own show choir,” she said.
