MOUNT VERNON — Alternative power sources keep essential city services going when there is an electrical power outage.

Power outages generally have a minimal effect on the operations of the Mount Vernon Police Department, said Capt. George Hartz.

“We have battery backup and a generator,” he explained. “Our radio system was down for about 90 minutes to two hours on Friday, so we dispatched personnel using [landline] phones and cell phones.”
