  • Knox County Sheriff David Barber, left, received the 2011 National Missing Children’s Law Enforcement Award in Washington, D.C., last week from the U.S. Department of Justice. Sharing in Barber’s recognition is Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
  • It’s still a mess outside the Newark Road McDonald’s, but the restaurant has remained open throughout the month-long remodeling project. Most of the project should be done this week, according to Mount Vernon market supervisor Sherry Patterson, but the new double drive-thru will probably not be done until the end of next week.
  • Fredericktown’s Garrett Gatton practices after school for Friday’s state track and field championships. Gatton is competing in three events.

  • Three people had minor injuries from this crash on Ohio 229, a mile east of the Morrow County line at 8 a.m. today. The crash is under investigation by Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Tiffany Wilson but details were not yet available this morning.
  • Jim Ferguson spent part of his evening on Monday trying to strain soap bubbles from the fountain on Public Square. He said he was sitting on the square Friday night when he saw three teenagers dump soap into the fountain. He used a small sieve to remove the bubbles, but wasn’t making much progress. A spokesperson for the city parks department said the fountain, and the one located at Riverside Park, are being hit nearly every night.
  • Firefighters from five departments battled a structure fire on Sycamore Road on Monday afternoon.
  • Spokes from Amish buggy wheels were left on the pavement after a buggy was hit by a truck Monday evening on U.S. 62. A ladder torn off the truck lies along the berm at upper right.
  • Shown above is the nearly-finished building to house The Sanctuary on Market Street in Danville. It is planned to be open soon with a new facility for Interchurch Social Services planned to be completed by fall.
  • Two-year-old Jane Landry has a big thrill, with her mouth wide open, as she swoops down the  frog slide at the Hiawatha Water Park/Pool. Her mom, Sarah, is there to scoop her up. The park opened Monday afternoon with a good crowd of kids and adults. It will open at 4 p.m. today and Wednesday, and open for regular hours on Thursday.
  • Fredericktown’s Taylor Keener, with her .653 batting average, .973 slugging percentage and 19 extra-base hits, is the 2011 Mount Vernon News All-Area Player of the Year.

  • Conveniently, just inside the door of the face lifted Neff’s super market is a coffee bar and slushie ice machine. Sampling a flavor is head cashier Janette Maglott.
  • Utica’s Jeremy Jenkins (6-3, 1.19 ERA) is the Mount Vernon News All-Area Pitcher of the Year.
  • Behind Morman Elder A.J. Glad are about one-fourth of the collection of books in a third-floor room over the High Restaurant. Glad and a colleague, Elder Jordan Driggs, volunteered to help remove the books during their summer as missionaries in Mount Vernon.
  • You have to be big and strong to be a motion picture photographer. Camera operator Tarik Kameedi, photographer for the movie “Liberal Arts,” being shot in Mount Vernon, shoots with a steadycam, a camera that holds steady while the operator walks around shooting a scene. The crew was on the parking lot at the First Christian Church on East Vine Street this morning setting up for scenes. They were also working around possible rain showers.
  • Knox County Royals’ Billy Jackson smacks a two-RBI single against Galion on Thursday. Galion came from behind to win, 7-6.
  • Fredericktown’s Nathan Cubbage, shown clearing the high jump bar at regionals, is the Mount Vernon News All-Area Boys Most Valuable Field Athlete.
  • Former Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets volleyball player Chris Omahan was named First Team All-Ohio.
  • This driver navigates down the middle of Venture Drive in order to miss holes created by the deterioration of the road. The street is not owned by the city but the administration is trying to work with the out-of-town owners to improve the roadway.
  • A new bridge on Apple Valley Drive, on the north side of Apple Valley, will open Monday. The bridge replaces six large culvert pipes that carried water from a small stream into Apple Valley lake. A spring flood washed debris against the pipes, which blocked the flow, causing water to partially wash out the edge of the road and berms. Personnel in the Knox County Engineer’s Office decided the pipes were no longer effective and took steps to construct the new bridge.
  • The shelter houses at Riverside Park were filled with Knox County veterans and their families enjoying a picnic Sunday at the annual Veterans Service Office picnic which featured an auction, karaoke and lots of fellow camaraderie.
  • Jay DePolo takes control over Jon Worstell in an MMA match on Saturday, May 28, in Fredericktown. DePolo is trained locally by LJJA Martial Arts Academy as part of Team Ruffhouse in Mount Vernon. DePolo won in a first round T.K.O. Another LJJA fighter, AJ Schuster, won in the first round after the fight was stopped by the referee.

  • A four-inch gas line that ran over the old culvert pipes on Apple Valley Drive at Apple Valley was cut and capped when the new bridge was built. Monday the Wenger Pipe Line Co. of Dalton was boring a 300-foot hole under the stream to reconnect the line. The instrument that Marty Wenger is holding is a sensor to help guide the boring tool. The bridge was slated to open Monday but Knox County Engineer Jim Henry said a correction in the asphalt approach on the east side delayed the opening. Pending completion of that work and completion of the gas line, the tentative opening is Wednesday.
  • Big fleecy clouds were all over the sky Monday. This scene is at the horse farm owned by Dave and Deb Cisler, about two miles south of Mount Vernon on Granville Road.
  • Residents in the west of Mount Vernon gathered Monday morning to discuss the possibility of creating a community garden at Arch Park. Leading the discussion was Whitaker Wright, right, of Community Development Consultants of Ohio.
  • Kevin Oliver will perform a tribute to Johnny Cash at the Danville-Howard Turkey Festival on Thursday at 9 p.m.

  • The construction of a storage building for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office is under way. The building, 40-foot-by-64-foot, is being constructed by Cleary Building Corp., Heath, at a cost of $49,900. An emergency resolution was passed in February by the Knox County Board of Commissioners to move forward with the project after evidence stored at the Mount Vernon City impound lot was destroyed in a fire. Under emergency status, the bid process is circumvented  to allow for acquisition of three estimates. The  estimates must be less than $50,000. According to Knox County Assistant Prosecutor Chip McConville, the intent was to construct the building as soon as possible, but weather conditions prolonged the process.
  • Purple ribbons have been placed throughout Mount Vernon in recognition of Friday’s Relay for Life event at Yellow Jacket Stadium. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a Cancer Survivors Lap and runs through noon on Saturday. Twenty-two teams hope to raise over $190,000 for cancer research.   • Utica Post 92’s Riley Swanson pitches in the third inning of Tuesday’s game against Johnstown Post 254. Swanson allowed one hit and no walks in the Royals’ 11-1 win.

  • The bridge over the North Branch of the Kokosing River on Ohio 95, at the north edge of Fredericktown, is being replaced. Ohio 95 will be closed between Zolman and Roberts roads through August 25. The posted detour will by Ohio 97 and Ohio 13 adding about five miles to a driver’s trip.

  • Bladensburg firefighters carry the roof of a crashed Jeep away from the vehicle after they cut it off with the Jaws of Life. Four people were trapped when it crashed into a utility pole Thursday evening.
  • This “Taste the Rainbow” game was a favorite among Fredericktown students at the recent probability carnival. Operating the game are Bailey Hoeflick, left, and Lauren Partington.
  • The 14th annual Ariel Corp. employee car show took place on Thursday with cars, motorcycles and fun vehicles on display. Nelson Hack brought his unique Pluse auto-motorcycle. Manufactured from 1986-94 in Owosso, Mich., it travels on two wheels but corners on the two side wheels. It seats the driver and one passenger in tandem. The Pulse was stored outside for 15 years when Hack found it. He has restored it over the six years he has owned it. It is powered by a Honda motorcycle engine. There was also a display of vintage motorcycles from the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington.

  • Edsel’s Excavating of Danville is completing a sewer line hookup on Mansfield Avenue in front of Dan Emmett Elementary School. The home, owned by Larry Miller, had only a small septic tank, which failed, and needed to be hooked up to the Mount Vernon sewer system. The project, paid for by the homeowner, took 300 feet of 4-inch plastic pipe and a new manhole. Getting the pipe seated in the trench is Phil Hunter, left, and Ben Buckland.
  • The Mount Vernon-Knox County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours meeting took place at WMVO radio station Tuesday evening. Radio personalities Marty Trese and Dave Bevington, both pictured at right, provided tours of the facility including the on-air studio. The event was part of the station’s 60th anniversary celebration.

  • A retired Mount Vernon dentist Dr. John Ewalt, 74, the driver, and his wife, Sharon, 64, were injured in this crash Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Mason Boyce said they were northbound on U.S. 62, two miles north of Martinsburg. The Ford Explorer veered across and off the left side of the road where it rolled over into an aluminum power pole. They were taken to Knox Community Hospital by the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department and flown by MedFlight helicopter to OSU Medical Center. Boyce said Sharon Ewalt had a serious head injury. Both John and Sharon are listed in fair condition this morning at OSU Medical. Boyce is still investigating the cause of the crash.

  • Ernest Betancourt and his granddaughter, Allison Driver, 15, secure their WACO with stakes and ropes so wind won’t damage it after they arrive in Mount Vernon, Thursday afternoon. Betancourt, with his wife, Nancy, and Allison as passengers, flew from their home in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to Wynkoop Airport for the WACO reunion. His WACO was built in 1999 from plans of a 1937 YMF open cockpit airplane. Betancourt is a retired Air Force pilot who flew C-141 cargo planes and helicopters in Vietnam. Allison is taking flying lessons and will solo on her 16th birthday.

  • Workers put the finishing touches on the frame for the roof of a new Amish school building on Nunda Road. The school is expected to be open this fall.
  • Four Eagle Scouts from the Centerburg area were honored as grand marshals of the USA Days Festival parade Saturday. The Eagle Scouts are Michael LeChand, Noah Orr, Adam Szilagyi and Thomas Thatcher.
  • Jeff Skiles was the co-pilot of the U.S. Airway Airbus Flight 1549, piloted by Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, that landed on the Hudson River, Jan. 15, 2009. A fellow pilot got Skiles interested in WACOs two years ago and he bought this 1935 YOC cabin biplane in Allentown, Pa. He became a WACO club member and this was his second year at the annual reunion in Mount Vernon.
  • Rhino Chimney Service won the 2011 Mount Vernon Girls Softball 8-under regular season and tournament championships. The team finished the year a perfect 12-0 in the regular season and 5-0 in the tournament to claim the title.   • Centerburg High School graduate Erin Wollett, left, was presented the first annual education scholarship of $1,000, recently by the Mount Vernon Retired Teachers Association. With her is member Rita Ball as they looked at children’s books purchased for the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County. Wollett is the daughter of Amy and Larry Wollett. She will attend Wilmington College and study agriculture education.
  • Utica Post 92 pitcher Seth King allowed one hit in four innings of work as the Royals knocked off Pickerington Post 283, 6-5.
  • Colton Finnell, of Dumbaugh Insurance, hits a single during his team’s minor league third-place game against Presley Construction on Monday. Presley Construction won, 26-4, to advance to today’s championship game.
  • The Buckeye Heat 98 12-under fastpitch softball team won the Heart of Ohio Summer Celebration tournament this past weekend in Marysville.   • Utica firefighter Paul Merryman used a chain saw to cut out sections of the wall to check for pockets of fire and structural damage to the house.
  • Presley Construction’s Kelton Grogg arrives safely on third base while Carpenter DDS’ Corey Rine applies the tag too late during Tuesday’s minor league championship game. Carpenter DDS won, 2-1.
  • COF pitcher Trace Hatfield allowed just one hit and no walks in a complete game shutout over Ariel. COF won, 2-0, to claim the Major League championship.
  • Utica Post 92’s Ethan Abell hits a bouncing ball that went over the second baseman’s head for a game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game. The Royals defeated Marysville Post 79, 9-8
