  • The Kokosing River was nearly over its banks and the viaduct Monday afternoon. Some tree branches can be seen stuck in the viaduct on the right.
  • The culverts under Apple Valley Drive at the north end of Apple Valley Lake struggled to keep up with the flood waters Monday. Water eventually washed over the road and county crews were checking the road for erosion this morning.
  • The Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross honored its ‘heroes’ at a breakfast this morning at Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene.   • This poured concrete wall and aluminum picket fence is the prefered choice of Mount Vernon City Council members and city administration for a project that will replace the deteriorating wall surrounding Mound View Cemetery.

  • Emma Conkle of North Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon, now has enough wood for the rest of the winter thanks to members of her church. Paul DeVore is shown loading a wagon with pieces of wood from the trailer; about 1 1/2 cords was delivered and stacked. The other men, Shawn Conrad, Jim Schock, Don Bryan and Ron Warner cut and split the wood Wednesday from one of their farms. The weather was perfect for the work, they said, sunny and cool with a light breeze.

  • High water always washes tree limbs and other debris down river, some of which collects around bridges. The viaduct over the Kokosing River on South Main Street collected trash around the piers during the flooding over the weekend. The city will remove the obstructions.

  • This pickup truck, driven by Gregory Miller, 45, Mount Vernon, went out of control before crashing into this guardrail and stream Wednesday at 9:10 a.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said he was westbound on Pleasant Valley Road when the pickup left the right side of the road, traveled down the ditch, bending the guardrail and breaking off two wooden posts. He was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control.

  • Flat Run Road, southeast of Danville near the Coshocton County line, was closed because of high water Wednesday afternoon. A small stream covered nearly 100 yards of the road. The road remains closed today.

  • Students from St. Vincent de Paul School recently held in a Shoot-A-Thon fundraiser with all proceeds going toward the replacement of the St. Vincent gym floor. The event, which raised $3,655, is part of an overall campaign to fund the replacement of the existing 58-year-old tile floor in the school’s gymnasium.  The leading fundraisers from each of the school’s eight basketball teams were awarded  new basketballs.   • Herman Woods, 58, Bladensburg, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, unauthorized used of a vehicle and failure to maintain reasonable control after a crash Monday at 2:16 p.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said he was northbound on Ohio 586, south of Sycamore Road, when he swerved across the road twice before going into the ditch. Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Brandon Ruhl tested Woods for his level of intoxication.

  • The new bridge on Banning Road at the intersection of Lover’s Lane is starting to get its legs. Five pilings are being driven to a friction fit into the ground to support each end of the bridge. The new bridge will be 79 feet long and 28 feet wide. It is of prestressed concrete box beam construction with a concrete deck. The cost is $272,250. Completion date is July 15.

  • Mount Vernon resident Gordon “Stretch” Brennan makes the most of St. Patrick’s Day each year. The local Irishman was decked out in green from head to toe on St. Patrick’s Day when he visited the News on Thursday. “Stretch” claims he would also spend the day visiting his mother and eating corned beef and cabbage. “It’s one of my favorite days of the year,” said Brennan.

  • When the site of the former Kresge building on South Main Street was filled with dirt, it was putting pressure on the basement wall of the adjoining Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Buchwald Center. A 9-foot deep wall was constructed, back filled with gravel and topped a concrete pad to take pressure off the wall. Workmen completed the project Friday.

  • This 54-year-old bridge on Lower Green Valley Road, at the intersection of Banning Road over Armstrong Creek, is being replaced. Assistant Knox County Engineer Larry Bechtel said the steel beams are rusted and the wood floor has deteriorated. Construction will start Wednesday on the new 64-by-28-foot roadway bridge. It will be of precast concrete box beam construction. Work is projected to take 60 days.
