  • Brant Curtis, who played for Utica Sertoma, was presented with a trophy for hitting the most home runs in the Little League Machine Pitch division. He hit six over-the-fence home runs this season, as well as 15 inside-the-park home runs. Curtis is the son of Rob and Claudine Curtis of Utica.
  • The second natural gas compressor produced by Ariel Corp. has been donated to the Knox County Historical Society Museum by founder Jim Buchwald, right. Museum director Jim Gibson, left, and Buchwald looked over the compressor when it was put on display Thursday. The museum already has posters and other artifacts for a display of the company’s products.

  • On July 31, the Knox County Lawnmower Racing Association, a subsidiary of the American Lawnmower Racing Association, held its first sanctioned race a mile and a half west of Danville. Shown are drivers competing in the race, sponsored by Donley Ford. The KCLRA had 18 racers in the Super Stock class. The association’s next event, a benefit race for cancer patient Kathy Kosman, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. Gates will open at noon.   • Wuidler Germain is participating in his first Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival Arts & Crafts show. Germain is from Haiti and paints scenes of the everyday life in his native country.
  • Members of the Centerburg High School football team did some volunteer work Thursday afternoon when they unloaded and spread 6,000 pounds of rubber tire mulch at the playground at the Centerburg Head Start. “We wouldn’t be able to send the kids outside to play if this weren’t done,” said Lauren Bennett, family and community specialist at Head Start. Use of the rakes and shovels was provided by United Way. Use of a Bobcat loader was provided by Centerburg Local Schools. “The boys have done other projects this summer like cleaning up after storms for area residents and working at the Knox County Fair,” said CHS head football coach Jim Stoyle.
  • Erik Stage’s Eagle Scout project of restoring the shelter east of Howard on the Kokosing Gap Trail.   • A one-vehicle crash at Knox Village Square on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the driver being transported by Life Flight to The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. George Hartz said a vehicle driven by Charles Fox, 88, Mount Vernon, rolled down the hill in front of Peebles toward Staples, coming to rest in a ravine. Two MVPD officers and two medics arrived at the scene and found the vehicle on fire. Fox sustained minor bumps and bruises and is doing well, according to his son, Ron Fox.

  • Badly damaged by the fire which destroyed the adjoining building, the structure on the corner of East College and North Main streets in Fredericktown was taken down Monday by Tom Swihart Excavating.  Building owner Brad Swihart said he “didn’t want to see it go,” but had little choice. Other than removing remnants of the building,  Swihart has no plans for the site at this time.

  • Work is progressing on the Wooster Road sidewalk project. This section, near Moundview Cemetery, had to have the area built up so there was room to put in the sidewalk. The new sidewalks are part of a Community Development Block Grant awarded to the city for projects that include sidewalks on Wooster and Sychar roads and Pleasant Street.
  • The work of Don Boyd, retired Mount Vernon Nazarene University professor, will be displayed at MVNU’s Schnormeier Gallery in September.
