MOUNT VERNON -- Newspaper In Education programs were first introduced in the 1930s as an educational partnership between newspapers and participating school systems, with the early programs aimed at secondary schools to teach current events. Today, NIE is an international program for students in preschool through college and beyond.

COLUMBUS -- Four years ago, Mount Vernon’s Michael Lybarger got his first taste of the State Wrestling Championships at Value City Arena. He was new to the sights, the sounds, and even the smells. On Saturday, he bid farewell to a place where he proved he belonged. Only the most elite wrestlers in the state get the chance to experience it -- and Lybarger made the trip four times. He becomes the second Yellow Jacket in school history to qualify every year of his high school career.

COLUMBUS -- It may have taken three trips, but Loudonville senior Ryan Thatcher finally made the podium at the Division III State Wrestling Championships. Thatcher beat Bridgeport’s Bryan Skoff on a 5-1 decision for third place in the 152-pound weight class.

WOOSTER -- A season-ending game for the Loudonville High School boys basketball team came on Saturday against the Akron Manchester Panthers. The Redbirds were defeated in the second round of the tournament, 59-52, at Wooster High School.
