MVPD interim chief Capt. George Hartz

MOUNT VERNON — Parents of students at Mount Vernon City Schools are reminded to be cautious of strangers in the school vicinity offering a ride to students.

Mount Vernon Police Department interim chief Capt. George Hartz told the News that police officers have received three separate reports of individuals offering a ride to students walking near Mount Vernon Middle School on Thursday afternoon. Each case included a different description of a vehicle and person involved. One report said the vehicle was a black Jeep, however, it is not believed to be the Jeep identified in a similar instance last week near East Elementary School.

“We don’t know how credible the reports are at this time, but our officers are looking into it,” said Hartz.
