MOUNT VERNON — Two young men were seriously injured in a one-car crash after a pursuit early this morning.

The Mount Vernon Police said Paul Scott Jr., 18, Mount Vernon, was flown by MedFlight helicopter to Grant Medical Center. An unidentified 15-year-old juvenile was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Scott’s condition was not available at press time.

The pursuit started at 3:30 a.m. on the Viaduct when an officer saw a car being driven recklessly, according to interim chief Capt. George Hartz. The chase went up South Gay Street, out East High Street and eventually onto New Gambier Road.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, said Scott’s car was about a mile outside of the city limits when it left the right side of the road, going into the ditch and into a fence before coming to a stop.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the car was stolen.

Hartz said the case will be given the Mount Vernon Prosecutor for review. Possible charges include underage consumption, reckless operation and no driver’s license. The patrol has charged Scott with driving under the influence and failure to control.
