Baldwin breaks records in Utica win
Saturday, October 12th
HEATH — A record-setting night from Travis Baldwin and the rest of the Utica offense led the team to its first Licking County League victory of the season on Friday, 59-38, over host Heath.
Baldwin set a new school mark with 471 rushing yards and tied another with six rushing touchdowns. The Redskins (2-5, 1-0) as a whole gained a school-record 647 yards. Baldwin’s total jackhammered the old record of 298 yards set by Dustin Walker in 2002 against Danville. His six TDs tied two others, the original mark set by John Horn against Licking Heights in 1972 and matched by Jason Hoar against Johnstown in 2008. The team record for yards was just two over the previous high, set against the same Heath Bulldogs in 2002.
Utica ran for 613 yards on 43 carries and completed one pass for 34 yards. Baldwin was not the only Redskin runner to do damage, as Zack Edmister rushed 14 times for 117 yards.
Baldwin had five TD runs of more than 50 yards, the first one coming at the 1:45 mark of the first quarter. He bolted from his own 10 yard line for a 90-yard score which made it 6-0. Heath (1-6, 0-2) tied the score in the second quarter on Aric Adams’s 8 yard pass to Bobby Kazar with 8:50 to play, but with 7:23 remaining Baldwin broke free for a 74-yard TD and a 14-6 lead.
Baldwin then made it 21-6 with a 10-yard run with 1:53 left in the half, but Kazar hauled in an Adams throw for a 47-yard score just 27 second later to cut the lead to 21-14, where it remained at halftime.
Baldwin picked up right where he left off in the second half, breaking the single-game rushing mark during a 71-yard TD with 9:37 to play in the third quarter. After a fumbled snap left the ball deep in Heath territory, the Redskins Pierce Piazza contributed a 2-yard TD run at the 8:15 mark to increase the lead to 33-14.
Utica scored twice more in the space of a minute later in the quarter on a 2-yard Mitchell Marston and a 53-yarder from Baldwin. Kazar then caught a 38-yard touchdown for the Bulldogs with 8.5 seconds to play, but Baldwin put an exclamation point on his night with a 66-yard TD run to close the period, 52-20.
Heath scored three touchdowns against Utica reserves in the fourth quarter, including Kazar’s fourth TD catch of the night, but Edmister scored a 6 yarder for Utica to close its scoring.
Jaison Greshem had a fine night in a losing cause for the Bulldogs, running 40 times for 250 yards.
Utica will return home on Friday to face Johnstown at 7 p.m.
