COLUMBUS — Football still has four weeks to go. But, for the rest of the high school sports scene, teams now have an idea what their postseason fortunes hold.
Sectional and district draws for volleyball, soccer and cross country were held in Columbus on Sunday.
The Highland volleyball team, which is 20-0 and has just two regular-season matches to go, drew the top seed in the Division III Central District tournament. The Scots will host Mount Gilead on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the sectional semifinals. The Indians have won just four matches all year. If they win, the Scots will face Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 19 for the sectional title.
East Knox, which drew a bye in the first round, will face either Pleasant or West Jefferson in the sectional finals on Oct. 19. Fredericktown, the 12th seed which also drew a bye, will travel to Northmor on the same day. Utica, which drew a No. 10 seed, will host 20th-seed North Union on Oct. 16. The winner faces Liberty Union on Oct. 19. Centerburg will play at seventh-seeded Bishop Ready in the sectional semifinals on Oct. 16. Should they win, the Trojans will go on the road to face Columbus Academy on Oct. 19.
Mount Vernon, the sole Division I team in the area, will travel to Canal Winchester for their sectional semifinal matchup on Monday. Should they win, the 23rd-seeded Yellow Jackets will host Zanesville on Wednesday, Oct. 16 for the sectional title.
Danville received the seventh seed in Division IV Central District and will host Northridge Christian on Thursday, Oct. 17, for the sectional championship.
All three local high school soccer teams have their postseasons set as well. The Mount Vernon boys team will travel to Teays Valley on Oct. 16 in their sectional semifinal. The Jackets would then travel to Westerville South on Oct. 19, should they win. The girls team will travel to Ohio Capital Conference foe Olentangy on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Jackets lost to the Braves, 5-0, on Oct. 1. A win next week would mean a trip to Pickerington Central on Thursday, Oct. 17, for the sectional crown.
East Knox will face Harvest Prep on Oct. 16. A win would put the Bulldogs at Columbus Academy on Oct. 19.
All local cross country teams will take part at the Central District championship at Watkins Memorial High School on Oct. 19. Advancing teams and individuals will then take part in Regionals at Pickerington North on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Football matchups will be determined after all Week 10 games have been played.
