Changes in scanner traffic encryption, approved by local law enforcement, will leave MARCS scanners silent except for fire and emergency medical services information. Those without a scanner capable of receiving MARCS signals will be completely silent.

Police to encrypt communications

When police agencies in Knox County complete their conversion to the MARCS communication system, people who enjoy listening to law enforcement communications on their scanners will have to find a new hobby — even if they have purchased a new digital scanner to pick up MARCS broadcasts.
